MLP:FIM REVIEW - SEASONS 1 - 3

You know, for the longest time I thought to myself that I would never watch this show. I saw it as just some little girls show that a lot of the internet and wider society loved for some reason. However, one day, I was really bored and after hearing about it for years on end, I gave it a shot.

My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic is like, actually good. It's REALLY good. I would've never thought I'd enjoy this show so much, especially since I thought so many negative things about it.

The show is about Twilight Sparkle, a pony from 'Canterlot' (Think like, an extremely rich place) who is tasked by Princess Celestia, her teacher and basically god, to defeat "The Mare in the Moon" AKA Nightmare Moon. This makes up the first two episodes, Friendship is Magic (those are the episode names), and ultimately Twilight is able to defeat Nightmare Moon and gains a new group of friends: Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Applejack.

The show from this point on follows this group, the Mane 6 (haha horse pun), on their adventures and Twilights study of Friendship.

SEASON 1 - GENERAL THOUGHTS

Going into this season, all I knew was that it was about ponies, there was sometimes evil people, that one The Living Tombstone song about a guy named Discord, the general creepypastas that were made about it, and that was about it. Thankfully, season 1 opens with this big lore piece about these two sisters: Princess Celestia and Princess Luna who controlled the day and night, how they got into a fight and Luna was banished, and basically everything that I said during the intro.

Overall, Season 1 is EXTREMELY EXTREMELY GOOD. It's probably my favourite, actually. There's a lot of mystery in this season as you don't really know anything about the world of Equestria yet and you're still adjusting to the ponies different lifestyles.

You can tell what each pony's about really just by their name, actually. Rainbow Dash likes to go fast and is a speed demon, Fluttershy is a shy pony, Rarity likes fashion and nice posh things. Pinkie Pie and Applejack are a bit harder to tell, but Applejack is basically if Texas was a pony and Pinkie Pie is a party addicted pony. Twilight Sparkle is the magic one that also likes books, btw. These personalities bounce off each other REALLY well, and make up a good 50% of the show. I don't think I could ask for better main characters, they're basically near perfect already.

For secondary/side characters, there's Spike, Sweetie Belle, Apple Bloom, and Scootaloo. Spike, serving as Twilight's assistant, starts off pretty weak. However, Spike improves a lot later into the season and especially in season 2 and 3. I like him though. Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo, and Apple Bloom make up a group called 'The Cutie Mark Crusaders', a cutie mark being this symbol thats put onto a ponies thigh when they find out their special talent. This group is very important as a lot of episodes end up revolving around them and they have some of my favourite episodes dedicated to what they do, which is trying out new random things in hopes that'll get their cutie marks.

Their efforts to get their cutie marks are genuinely really charming and pretty funny overall, my favourite episode about them being Show Stoppers.

SEASON 1 - WEIRD QUIRKS

This season does a lot of things that the others don't really do. Since Twilight's just met the Mane 6, they're all very selfish and don't really look out for each other.

Twilight in this season is also REALLY different from what she's like later on. Honestly, I miss this. She's super grumpy and is very fed up with the ponies bullshit a lot of the time which really works well. I assume some sort of executive descision forced them to make Twilight nicer as she IS the main character of the show and she probably wouldn't sell many toys. (This show was made to sell toys btw. My Little Pony is a toy.)

The animation in this season is also quite weird. The animation studio was very obviously still learning how to animate ponies, so there's some scenes in the earlier episodes where the necks of ponies will be in weird positions or the tweening on their rigs will be off, ect ect. It adds to the charm, really.

This season is mean overall, actually. During Applebuck Season, Rainbow Dash is extremely rude to Applejack, who at this point in the episode is really tired after working for long hours. I frequently questioned why the Mane 6 were even friends... This season also had a tenancy of introducing things that either haven't shown up since or show up waaayyy later making it really confusing why they're being shown in Season 1. The Cake family is a very frequent addition to this season, and they only really get like 2 more episodes as far as I've watched.

This is the part where I talk about Pinkie Pie.

I'm putting this under weird quirks as I do believe she gets better. However, I do not like Pinkie Pie at all in this season starting from around episode 3. Her whole bit is being a party pony who's extremely excitable and she NEEDS to lay off the sugar. The issue with Pinkie Pie is that she ends up messing up a lot of situations that could've been completely prevented if she were to just stand away and do nothing for a while.

A PRIME example of this is in Bridle Gossip, where Pinkie Pie tells this story about the mysterious zebra Zecora that basically makes her seem like she'll kill you if you get close. This causes the Mane 6 to not listen to her warnings and end up being poisoned by these flowers Zecora specifically said would hurt them. This, plus a bunch of other episodes where she ends up doing horrible things to people, made me really dislike her. She does have her good moments though, like in Griffon the brush off, with her flying machine and how her playfulness actually made the episode better even if she upset my goat Glida.

SEASON 1 - FEATURED EPISODE - SONIC RAINBOOM

"LADS WE MADE IT THIS IS THE BEST EPISODE EVER ITS JUST THE BEST DUDE."

This is my favourite episode of Season 1. It's just great overall.

In this episode, Rainbow Dash goes to Cloudsdale, where clouds are made, to do this flying show for Princess Celestia. During this, the Mane 6 can't all go as only Pegasus (Ponies with Wings) can actually touch clouds and not fall through. Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy have wings, so they go, however, Rarity ALSO gets wings due to Twilight's ability to use magic and ends up going too. The Mane 6 eventually do all get there due to yet again, Twilight's magic, and are able to watch.

The main conflict of this episode is with Rarity and Rainbow Dash, where Rarity is constantly showing off her wings, making the other ponies jealous, meanwhile Rainbow Dash is mad that she's taking all the attention and is also scared to perform for Celestia as she's tasked with doing a Sonic Rainboom.
(That's like really hard, and she's the only one able to do it.)

This episode concludes with Rarity entering the competition Rainbow Dash desperately wanted to do and keeps showing off her wings until the sun comes out and completely burns through them as the magic was beginning to wear off. This results in Rainbow Dash panicking and performing her first Sonic Rainboom in YEARS just to save her friend from falling to her doom. This scene is EXTREMELY well done and is the highlight of the episode, you'll literally be cheering with the crowd. Afterwards, Rarity admits she was way too fucked for doing that and everyone goes away from that experience happy.

The reason I like this episode so much is because it really just has a good bit of everything. The opening scene before the intro is extremely memorable and funny, with Fluttershy's really good cheering (yaaaaayy). Cloudsdale as a whole is an extremely cool location that isn't visited very frequently, so I was very glad that they went there. It's overall funny, too. Rarity's boasting is so over exxagerated and you can tell how much fun the writers were having with it. Also the pony who was in the backstage room sounded like Lois Griffin so I thought that was really fucking funny.

Good episode, man.

SEASON 1 - WHY DO I LIKE THIS?

I don't know why, but this show is extremely nostalgic to me. The most I'd seen of it before watching season 1 was like, very small parts of episodes on TV when I was passing by, but this show could've only really come out between 2008 - 2010, which guess what, is a time period I like. It's so different from the other 'Generations' of MLP too, those I just cannot get behind, meanwhile this one I've ended up writing an entire passionate article exclaiming my genuine love for what's been made here. A shit ton of passion went into this, and it's moreso a show rather than a kids show made to sell toys. It all feels very familiar, yet unfamiliar.

This is the only season I wrote a small review for EVERY SINGLE episode. It takes a long time and I'm not gonna do it again. You can read that at the link underneath this, however, do be warned the grammar's pretty shit and there is a lot of dumb jokes some people won't find funny. Also, lots of swearing.

Click here to see the episode reviews for Season 1.

Final thing I'm adding for S1, the entire time I was watching the show I also had Time Fcuk at like the final puzzle in the background. I beat Time Fcuk the same day I watched MLP.

SEASON 2 - GENERAL THOUGHTS

Season 2 is basically if you took Season 1 and just made more of it + some more world-building.

This season is the introduction of my favourite villian of the show, Discord. I knew of him for a pretty long time, however I didn't really know how he acted. I genuinely couldn't have asked for a better villian. If you've not seen the show, Discord is this embodiment of pure chaos that is capable of extreme destruction and really horrible things. However, he does this through the funniest and dumbest ways possible. There's numerous times in his episodes, 'The Return of Harmony' where he'll just completely cover his ears, go "Lalalala, can't hear you." and fuck up the Mane 6's plans to take him down. He's ridiculous, I love him, and I'm very glad that they bring him back later on in the season. (Or season 3, I forget, but Season 3's just kinda a continuation of later Season 2.)

In this season the animation studio switched, and it's a good thing that it did because this show looks REALLY GOOD now. Sometimes, it's hard to tell it's even in Flash 8.

The vibes in this season are basically the same as they were in season 1, although they're 100% a bit lighter-hearted. No more Twilight groans, Pinkie Pie's around a lot more, Rainbow Dash isn't shaming people for being slow much. It's nice, but I do miss the very slight edge of the older season 1 episodes.

A lot of the episodes in this season were actually my first exposures to MLP. Before I even decided I wanted to watch the whole show I watched 'Find your Pet' and the Daring Do episode. Thank GOD I watched those as they're my favourites from this season, especially find your pet.

This season takes place in Canterlot a lot more, especially near the end. Ponyville by this point to the writers had been kinda milked dry, so it was nice to go to Canterlot for a while. Maybe we go there a bit TOO much though... I really enjoyed the mystery of season 1, yet season 2 basically leaves zero mystery with Equestria. There's even a whole episode that's just a stageplay that explains the whole lore of the show. It's welcome I guess, but I miss the mystery.

These episodes are probably the strongest episodes in the show. They're this perfect blend of happy while also having conflict, the art and visuals is really good, the writing is top notch here and the whole season sort of feels like a musical, actually. Seriously, there's so many songs that it could potentially compete for that title.

My favourite song was most likely the smile song, it's a good song all around. It's also pretty iconic, since if you ask someone who knows vaguely anything about MLP and you play this song they'll know it. The animation was also really good for it too, everyone who made this season really tried their best and put a lot into it. This also goes with how Pinkie Pie actually wasn't the worst this season. I found myself actually enjoying a lot of her jokes and while I didn't want MORE screentime for her, I wasn't bothered that she was there doing her thing much.

Also I liked when Angel got the hat in hurricane fluttershy, here's my drawing of that I made it as the episode was playing this took like 2 minutes.

Overall, if I were to try introduce someone to MLP and they were willing to watch a few episodes, I'd show them episodes from this season. This is the most MLP MLP gets, and it fucks hard. I highly suggest you watch this season as it has very little quirks unline season 1 and isn't too lore focused like some of the later ones. It's just great.

SEASON 2 - FEATUED EPISODE - A CANTERLOT WEDDING

A Canterlot Wedding is this two episode finale to Season 2 that was advertised really heavily. This episode features a lot of really cool things, however, it's the episode that marks a bit of a shift in MLP to me.

What do I mean by this? I mean that this episode really feels like it was made to sell toys.

Now, don't get me wrong, that IS the main goal of this show, but in the past it felt like the toys were made based on the show. This time around, it feels like we're making new characters purely for merchandise. I doubt that Princess Cadence and Shining Armor were ever meant to exist in this universe and WOULDN'T have existed if it weren't for Hasbro wanting money. It's mostly okay, though, as the writers on this show do their job as usual and try to write them in as best as they can. Personally, I think they did a pretty good job.

Actually talking about the episode, it starts with Twilight and her friends getting tickets to the wedding in Canterlot her 'Big Brother Best Friend' (She actually says that.) Shining Armor is having with her old babysitter Princess Cadence. She had like, zero prior knowledge that this was happening, btw. They make it to Canterlot and Twilight is immediately very confused. Canterlot is under immense lockdown. Shining Armor is a pretty good character this episode, he really serves as a protector as he's holding up this big shield that completely covers the whole city, and also protects Twilight from danger. Then, we meet Cadence. Now, since I'm not this show's target audience, it was immediately obvious to me that Cadence was not actually Cadence, but was some fucked up illusion or shapeshifter in the form of her. Twilight keeps noticing that things are very off between Cadence and Shining Armor and is able to piece together basically what I just said. However, nobody believes her, until...

CHANGELINGS FUCK REALLY HARD AND I LIKE THEM A LOT

Turns out, Cadence was actually Chrysalis, who is a "Changeling". These changelings are a whole species of these fucked up evil bug guys that can transform into anything they want. Now that Chrysalis is in the big shield thingie, she's been slowly taking away Shining Armor's energy so that the bubble shield evaporates and the changelings can invade and persumably take over Canterlot. I actually didn't see this twist coming, I thought she was just evil as fuck but NO she was EVILER than I expected.

Changelings pose a really big threat, actually, as once they invade the Mane 6 have to fight them off meanwhile they transform into their friends and whatnot. A good 25% of part 2 of this episode is this massive fight scene where Twilight and the others are having to fight off these changelings meanwhile Chrysalis continues to be evil as fuck.

Really wasn't expecting action from this show, but it fucks.

SEASON 3 - A BIT OF BACKGROUND

Season 3 is a very weird season compared to the others, since as far as I'm aware it's the shortest with only 13 episodes instead of the usual 25. So why is this? Well, Hasbro comissioned a new TV-Movie called 'Equestria Girls' which is basically just MLP but they're in high-school for some reason and it sucks. I watched it a long time ago, probably 2023-2024, and I did not like it.

Furthermore, the main show was in a state of severe confusion, the team thought that they probably weren't going to get any more episodes comissioned. This also adds to the finale of this season, Magical Mystery Cure, being the episode where Twilight graduates from Celestia's teachings and gets wings.

Yeah, that's kinda it.

SEASON 3 - GENERAL THOUGHTS

Season 3 is pretty much just a continuation of Season 2. I really enjoyed the episodes here, actually. It's not as strong as Season 1, but it's got some of Season 1's little quirks, which I enjoy.

A lot of this season was actually devoted to bringing back stuff from Season 1 and 2 that never really got much air time. The Great and Powerful Trixie, one of my favourite season 1 characters comes back, and she's great throughout her whole episode. It also ends with her potentially staying for more episodes? I haven't watched far enough to see if that pays off but I hope it does.

Discord from season 2 also comes back which was really cool, and his episode around that is extremely strong too.

"do you think when this episode released and he said friendship is magic some dude out there just like began to applaud like that one oscars gif"

There's not much to really talk about here. It's just good. This definetly feels like a finale season, though. You could really just watch up to this season and its finale and walk away satisfied. But no, I have 6 more seasons to review.
