BY THE WAY..
this project is actually a game. if you want to play it, just click on the games tab and click the preview.
INTRO
did you know? riddle university is a game in which you escape riddle university. another fun fact is that riddle university is actually a university. thank you for listening to my fun facts. if you would like more fun facts, contact your 3 closest myspace friends and send this to them. a carrier pidgeon will give you more facts.
"Phil is now in Riddle University contemplating his escape. Little does he know this will be the most challenging, confusing, stupid, funny, idiotic, stragadoolish, utterly insane escape he has ever attempted."
riddle university is a game in which you, the player, control phil, a school student bored of class, really wanting to escape to go do who knows what. probably crimes!
this game is very obviously based on the "riddle school series" made by a creator who DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE NAMED DUE TO HIS ACTIONS. the game this is based on is riddle school 4, a game in which if you click anything, phil is killed. it was an april fools joke. however, before the idea of an april fools joke, the creator was actually making riddle school 4 into a full game. riddle university.
BEHIND THE SCENES
infact, there were still many leftovers from riddle university in riddle school 4's code. so you know what that means!
back in march of 2024, i joined a voice call with some good friends of mine. one of them (i honestly cannot remember who...) said that they were gonna start a studio that purely made flash games, with riddle university being the debut title. obviously, these plans fell through quickly, or the game wouldnt be on my account. the only thing from this group that is in the game is bombdude, the guy in the second classroom.
development from march - around september was extremely slow. i basically made the entire school, and that was it. i didnt know a bit of actionscript, which is the programming language of flash.
the reason why it took so long to actually begin coding?
... i'm lazy.
Anyways... basically all work from 2024 is no longer in the game. Shock! Horror! why is that?! its because i realised the perspective and drawings sucked. so i redrew everything in only a couple days. if i didnt slack off so long, this probably wouldve took a few weeks.
NEVER BEFORE SEEN CONTENT
ive been talking about these so much, so heres some examples of the school throughout its development. i will note that some things MAY be skipped over since i suck at categorising my files, i should really do that actually.
...
its a good time to mention that during the making of this game i was still learning to animate, despite having quite a bit of experience. anyways, this would have been used for when you exit mr.munch's classroom. usually in riddle school games phil will have a custom animation for walking out of the first room... i just didnt do that since every concept i made looked bad.
i recall back when i made this i thought "this is genuinley the worst thing ever?"
these are the first classrooms i were able to draw for the game. a lot of the jokes from these rooms actually made it into the final game, although they may have moved places. the only joke that stayed the exact same was the "alpaca spit wet floor sign" thing. i had that one in my head for a while since for some bizarre reason i thought it was really funny. i mean it was, but it sounds like a novelty item you'd get off some local shop.
i'd also like to note that this game is more of a "riddle high school 2" rather than university. this is actually for many "very interesting" reasons you may not have known about! like:
i'm not american.
i am not in university for a long time.
i am pretty sure that in university, you can really just leave whenever you want.
yeah
wait, whyd i put that in the never before seen content part.. im smart.
SCHOOL SKETCHES
to optimise creating the game, i took upon the challenge of not doing maths work to instead draw phil eggtree hitting the griddy. i actually was able to note down and plan a lot of the game this way. there's more in my modern studies book it's just that i'm pretty sure that's been thrown away, which sucks.
originally, the cutscene where mr.munch eats the donut would be a lot higher effort, with you being able to see phil actually hang it over his head. the plan was that he'd try grab the donut and end up falling through the floor (for context, the person who shall not be named did stuff like this a lot for some odd reason) where he'd soon be able to be found in the cafeteria, toppled over onto his head... okay man is that painful.
however, i thought it would be better to use the original riddle school 4 cutscene in which he presses the button, except change it to be for the donut instead. mr.munch in my game is still evil, he just "forgot to kill phil" so he isnt really that evil. anyways yeah, he eats a donut. wowowowowowowow. insane.
i believe this was the very first "idea" sketch of mrs bulldozers class room. also, fun little thing about her name, i had to think "whats a good yet really dumb name for a teacher?" and then randomly said "bulldozer". so that became her name.
anyways with this image it's really just a sketch of the class with the whole "sneaking" gimmick still there from the beginning. a lot of people thought that the room had broken due to it being pitch black when you enter. now originally i actually had a solution to this issue yet i never implemented it. basically this room would have occured much later in the game so you could obtain another item, and due to being later in the game it would be thunderstorming. so you could find the combination easier by using the lightning in the background to see. i kind of wish i did this, actually.
finally, this is the biggest of them all...
alien :)
anyways, back to the unused content.
and here was the first "finished" graphic i made for the game, of course it never actually ended UP in the game. this is a part of that thing where mr.munch would fall down into the cafeteria on his head, creating a massive crater in it. the reason it never made it into the game is because 1: i didnt feel like it and 2: the school isnt layed out that way. if he fell from there he'd most likely end up in the art class.
anyways, that's pretty much it. there is more, you can see those below, but i won't do any in depth explanations on them.
